Why am I always the last to know?

Apparently the term GIS died...How come I'm always the last to know these things...

:)

And when did GIS just become data and mapping?

"when did GIS just become data and mapping"

There's little geodata available on the Internet, so there's not much point in creating real GIS webapps until that primary issue has been resolved. At least that's the approach we took with Koordinates.

I think there are varying degrees of geodata available (free to very very overpriced), and it depends on which country. The U.S. for the most part gives data away that was publicly funded. The UK doesn't have the same policy, but I've heard it argued that the UK data is better quality than say US Census TIGER data.
One thing I think Koordinates does really well (after exploring the site), is makes the data available in a very clear and straightforward manner. I've never thought that about any of the US government sites where I've tried to download data.
